FEATURED PROJECT client: Fire Starter services rendered Identity, Print

Fire Starters is a non-profit organization that's goal is make life-long changes in the youth of Omaha through a mentorship program. Their target audience is two-fold: school-age youth and adults mentors. Since they were a new organization, they needed help creating an identity that would spark interest from both groups. They needed logo and collateral design and have also requested a web site (in progress now).

The conceptual process started with research of other non-profit organizations and then moved on to preliminary sketches. The idea that you can create a significant movement of change with just a small "spark" in the beginning was central to this part of the process. I worked on a number of concepts for the logo but eventually felt like a flickering flame would be a great way to carry the concept.

I then began to work out a couple icons in Adobe Illustrator. A clean flame was ok but it didn't have the same feel of being on the front lines or on the edge of the movement. The text is a combination of two different fonts in order to create a "rough" feel that matches the flame. I also wanted to add an element of a campfire so I added the "ground" lines at the base of both the icon and the text. We ended up with a black and white as well as a color version for them.
